Field report on the project ‘home in me’ by Daniela Binder
My solo ‘home in me’ deals with the process of creating a place within yourself that you love, where you feel safe and secure and that you always have with you. A retreat, a home within. This is particularly important at times when there is chaos on the outside. For me, the ‘outside’ during the residency week was the noisy, crowded and very fast-paced city of Hamburg, so it was a perfect basis for this research.
I started by looking at what makes me personally feel at home and how this feeling manifests itself in me. Familiar sounds, smells and rituals, recurring processes, trigger a feeling of safety and security in us. The nervous system can slow down and our breathing becomes calmer and more regular. As I naturally didn’t have this available to me alone in a foreign city, my next step was to find out how I could create this effect within myself, without or IN SPITE of external influences. In this research I came across various techniques such as breathing exercises, humming and conscious touch, which I explored in combination with movement.
