Field report on the project ‘Fachaustausch für Tanz in ländlichen Regionen’ (‘Professional exchange for dance in rural regions’) by Bianca Kruppa

As part of an exchange programme for dance in rural regions, I visited the Ponderosa e. V. dance project in Stolzenhagen, Brandenburg, from 29 May to 2 June 2023. During this time, the focus was on getting to know and exchanging ideas with other dance professionals from the regional scene in Brandenburg. I gained an insight into the work of Ponderosa e.V. and the structures of the Brandenburg dance scene. During a visit of the Potsdam Dance Days, an internal meeting of various dance professionals from Brandenburg took place, which I also attended. I also used the dance studios for technical and conceptual work on sensors that translate movement into sound in real time.

Ponderosa e. V. (Stolzenhagen) is an inspiring place for artistic work with its dance studios, large community kitchen, garden and guest rooms. I still see the establishment of a cultural centre in the countryside as a major pioneering project that is fraught with many challenges. Without supportive networks and a willingness to take risks, the creation of new (i.e. more diverse, more cost-effective, jointly managed) spaces is hardly possible.
